Performance Management

Article by Amanda J. Howard, ManagementInfoCenter.com

Objective standards are normally used to measure the Performance Management of an organization.

All the members of an organization are involved in the systematic process, known as Performance management. Essentially, the supervisors are provided with implements to put into operation a performance management plans with proper resources to be able to communicate with the workforce conveniently.

This plan is implemented so that organizational effectiveness is developed in all the members of the association, which will lead to the targets of the organization being met. Absolute perfection is required for Performance Management so that the jobs are designed adequately and then supervised effectively. Detailed planning, taking into consideration all possible risk factors, needs to be done.

The main aim of Performance management is to create a perfect understanding between the employees and the supervisor by putting into operation non-stop communication channels between them so that there is no misunderstanding regarding job responsibilities, priorities and desired performance results. It encourages teamwork and gives regular feedback in an effort to boost employee advancement.

It is a systematic process that leads to better job performance through improved skill development. It monitors performance levels at each stage and rates the performance levels so that those individuals who are doing well get suitably rewarded and feel that they are an integral part of the organization.

The various steps in Performance Management are:

It makes the key objectives and priorities absolutely clear to all the members of the organization. This enables the resources to be correctly and optimally used.

It also makes life easier for the employees as they are aware of the organization’s expectations and as such they can ask for more resources, if necessary, in order to achieve the expected results.

Performance Management makes it easier to measure the performance of the various services so that corrective measures can be taken if something is amiss.

Lastly, it is very helpful in enabling the organizations to fulfill their legal requirements regarding safety, health, diversity and equality in employment matters. The contractual terms, both implied and explicit, are binding on the employees. There might also be certain legal issues regarding termination of an employee’s appointment based on incapability and non-performance to the desired levels by the employee.

Advantages of Performance Management

  • The focus of Performance Management is not on apparent behaviors or activities. Instead, it highlights the results. A supervisor might believe that an employee is very busy, as he might just be appearing to be doing a lot of work. However, in reality, he might not be contributing anything to the achievements needed by the organization. Thus those employees who prefer manual review of forms instead of automating the process might appear to be busy and working hard but are not helping in the progress of the organization.
  • Performance Management helps to streamline the activities of the organization and all the processes and brings them in consonance with the set targets of the organization. This is done by the following link of activities; identifying organizational targets, defining the results that would lead to those targets, finding what level of effectiveness or efficiency is required to reach the target, and providing the implements to achieve the targets.
  • It tends to develop an overall view of the organization.
  • It creates effective evaluations.

There are many helpful applications of these evaluations particularly in the fields of benchmarking and comparison standards.

Performance management sets into motion as soon as anyone associated with the organization joins it and it continues till the person leaves the organization. Performance management shows the path to be followed if the organization wishes to achieve success in its venture.
